The short answer

There is no approved medicine for meth (ice) addiction, so treatment is mainly behavioural therapy, with a doctor watching for depression and psychosis in the first weeks. Centers in Thailand that publish prices charge a median of US$11,834 for 28 days of residential treatment.

Thailand is at the centre of the region's meth trade and its drug laws are severe, so plan your aftercare as carefully as the program itself.

What is meth addiction?

Methamphetamine is a strong stimulant. It is known as ice or crystal meth in crystal form and as yaba in pill form in Thailand and its neighbours. The World Health Organization classifies problems with it under ICD-11 code 6C46, which covers harmful use, dependence, withdrawal and stimulant-induced psychosis.[3]

Dependence means meth has taken control: you use more than you meant to, it crowds out work and relationships, and you keep going despite the harm. Only a clinician can diagnose it, but if that pattern sounds familiar, for you or someone you love, it is worth getting an assessment.

Which health effects should a doctor check?

NIDA lists paranoia, anxiety, a fast or irregular heartbeat, raised blood pressure, stroke, kidney damage and overdose among the harms of methamphetamine.[2] Some people develop psychosis: hearing or seeing things that are not there, or firmly believing things that are not true.

NIDA says these psychotic symptoms can continue even when a person is no longer using, and that stress and heavy drinking make them more likely to return in people who have had them before.[2] Some studies have also linked long-term use with problems in memory and learning.[1]

That is why a good program starts with a medical and psychiatric assessment, not just an intake form. Ask whether a psychiatrist will see you, and how the center handles psychosis or suicidal thoughts. If depression, anxiety or trauma came before the meth, our dual diagnosis guide explains what to look for.

What is meth withdrawal like?

Most withdrawal symptoms start within 1 to 2 days of stopping and return to baseline after 7 to 14 days, according to NSW Health clinical guidance.[4]

The same guidance says symptoms peak between days 2 and 5, and that problems with sleep, mood and cravings can last several weeks.[4] Australia's Alcohol and Drug Foundation describes a "crash" of about 1 to 3 days, with heavy tiredness and long sleep, followed by about 7 to 10 days of acute withdrawal.[5]

The foundation says meth withdrawal is relatively safe and often happens at home, but that severe depression and other complications need prompt medical help. It also says some people have sleep and mood problems and cravings for several months.[5] Those months are often when relapse happens, which is why aftercare matters so much.

What treatment works for meth?

NIDA says there is no medicine approved by the US FDA for methamphetamine use disorder or any other stimulant use disorder.[1]

The core of treatment is therapy. NIDA describes these approaches as having evidence behind them:[1]

  • Contingency management. Small, concrete rewards, such as vouchers, for drug-free tests and for staying in treatment. NIDA calls it the best-studied behavioural treatment for meth.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Learning to spot triggers and cravings and to handle them differently.
  • Motivational interviewing. Conversations that help you work out your own reasons to change.
  • Group and peer support. Mutual-help groups and structured group therapy.

Research on medicines continues. In 2021, an NIH-funded trial found that a combination of two existing medicines, injectable naltrexone and oral bupropion, helped some adults with moderate or severe methamphetamine use disorder use less than placebo did.[6] It is not an approved treatment for meth, and whether it suits anyone is a decision for a doctor.

Ask a Thai center which of these approaches it actually uses. Contingency management is the best-studied therapy, but it is designed around regular drug tests and rewards over months, so ask how a short residential stay connects to it, or to similar support, when you get home.

How long should treatment last?

NIDA says most people need at least 3 months in treatment to significantly reduce or stop drug use, and that longer treatment gives the best results.[7] Those 3 months can combine a residential stay with outpatient care afterwards. A 28-day program that ends with no plan for the next two months is only part of the treatment.

What does Thai drug law mean for someone treating meth?

UNODC says methamphetamine seizures in East and Southeast Asia reached a record 349 tons in 2025.[8]

Thailand sits next to the region's main production area in Myanmar's Shan State, and Thai authorities seized about one billion methamphetamine tablets in 2024.[9] In practice, meth is not hard to find in Thailand, so anyone in early recovery needs a plan for cravings that does not depend on willpower alone.

The law is severe. Australian government advice says drug offences in Thailand can carry the death penalty, and that possessing even small amounts can lead to long jail terms and deportation.[10] UK advice also warns of heavy fines or prison for small amounts.[11]

Being a patient at a treatment center does not protect anyone who buys or carries drugs. Ask the center how it supports people who relapse during the program, and what happens if someone leaves the grounds to use.

What does meth rehab in Thailand cost?

The median published price for 28 days of residential addiction treatment is US$11,834, from 8 centers that publish prices on their own websites.[12]

Published entry prices run from US$8,500 to US$21,933 for 28 days. We found no separate price lists for meth programs, so expect the general residential price.[12] Six of 10 centers whose price pages we read charge for medication separately, and six charge separately for hospital or off-site medical care, which matters if psychosis needs hospital treatment.

A government drug-treatment hospital, Thanyarak Khon Kaen Hospital, publishes daily fees that include a separate nursing rate for non-Thai nationals. Its fees are listed as parts, not a package, and its information is mainly in Thai.[12] Our cost guide has an estimator for flights, visas and extras.

Questions to ask a center before you pay

Ask for written answers before you pay a deposit or book flights. A good center will answer clearly and won't pressure you to decide quickly.

  1. Is the center licensed, and which doctor is responsible? Our safety checklist shows how to check.
  2. Will a psychiatrist assess me? Ask how often you would see one, and whether that costs extra.
  3. What happens if I become psychotic or suicidal? Ask which hospital is used, how far away it is, and who pays.
  4. Which therapies do you use for stimulants? Ask whether the program includes CBT, contingency management or similar, and how much of it is specific to meth.
  5. How do you handle relapse during the stay? Ask whether someone who uses is discharged, and whether any refund applies.
  6. What is the plan for the 3 months after discharge? Ask for an aftercare plan that connects you to a doctor or service at home before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a medicine for meth addiction?

Not an approved one. NIDA says no medicine is approved by the US FDA for methamphetamine use disorder. A large NIH-funded trial found that a combination of two existing medicines helped some adults use less, but it is not an approved treatment, and any medicine should be a decision for a doctor who has assessed you.

Is meth withdrawal dangerous?

Meth withdrawal is usually not physically dangerous in the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be. The main risks are severe low mood, suicidal thoughts and, for some people, paranoia or psychosis. Get medical help quickly if any of these appear, and talk to a doctor first if you also drink heavily or take sedative pills.

How long does it take to recover from meth?

Australian health services describe a crash of 1 to 3 days and acute withdrawal that usually settles within 1 to 2 weeks. Sleep problems, low mood and cravings can last several weeks or months. NIDA says most people need at least 3 months in treatment in total, which can include care after you get home.

How much does meth rehab in Thailand cost?

Among centers that publish a price on their own website, the median for 28 days of residential addiction treatment is US$11,834, with a range of US$8,500 to US$21,933 (October 2026). We found no separate price lists for meth programs. See our Price Index.

Is it safe to go to rehab for meth in a country with strict drug laws?

Going to a licensed treatment center is not a crime, but buying, carrying or using meth in Thailand is, and Australian government advice says drug offences there can carry the death penalty. Bring no drugs with you, and if you relapse during or after the program, ask the center's doctor for help rather than buying locally.
