The short answer
Centers in Thailand publish prices of about US$4,300 to US$25,700 for a 28–30 day residential program, with an overall average of about US$12,000.
Budget for extras too: flights, a visa, medication and, at some centers, medical detox, VAT or a deposit. Thailand is usually cheaper than private rehab in the UK, Australia or the US, but the gap depends on which programs you compare.

A 28-day program: Thailand vs private rehab at home
Commercial sources often say Thailand costs a quarter to a third of comparable private care in the West.
Published ranges for a 28-day (or one-month) private residential program. Western figures come from treatment providers, directories and cost guides, so treat them as rough benchmarks.

How to read this chart. Bars run from the lowest to the highest published price on a US$0–100,000 scale. Pounds and Australian dollars are converted at rough assumed rates (£1 ≈ US$1.30, A$1 ≈ US$0.65); labels show the figures as published, in their original currency. The line on the Thailand bar marks the average of about US$12,000.
What it shows. The gap is widest against US luxury programs. Standard UK and Australian programs overlap with Thailand's premium tier, and the cheapest UK clinics overlap with its mid-range.

What the price usually includes, and what costs extra
Packages differ, so treat this as a checklist and get the details in writing before you pay a deposit.
Usually in the package price
- Accommodation. A shared or private room for the whole program. Check which one you are being quoted for.
- Individual and group therapy. Ask how many one-to-one sessions a week are included.
- Assessment on arrival. An initial assessment and a written treatment plan.
- Meals. Ask about special diets if you need one.
- Activities. Exercise, mindfulness sessions and outings vary from center to center.
Often charged separately
- Flights. Return flights to Thailand are not included.
- Visa. Check entry rules for your nationality and length of stay with a Thai embassy before you book.
- Medication. Some centers charge prescribed medication separately.
- Medical detox or hospital care. This may be billed separately, especially at lower-priced programs.
- VAT and deposits. Some centers add 7% VAT. Published deposits include about US$2,000, sometimes non-refundable, or 50% of the fee before arrival.

Does insurance cover rehab in Thailand?
It depends on your policy and where you live, so plan as if you will pay yourself and check with your insurer before you pay a deposit. Where we have no reliable information, we list the questions to ask instead of guessing.
From the UK
UK private medical insurance plans from providers such as Bupa or AXA almost always require treatment at a recognised UK facility, and they rarely, if ever, pay a rehab in Thailand directly.
International health plans such as Cigna Global are more likely to help, usually with limits on what they pay and pre-authorisation before treatment. Addiction that started before the policy began is usually excluded.
Ask your insurer
- What does the policy wording say about addiction, mental health and treatment abroad?
- Do I need pre-authorisation, and can I have it in writing before I travel?
- How are pre-existing conditions treated?
- Will you pay the center directly, or reimburse me later? Which documents do you need?
From Australia
Some Australians pay for treatment through early release of their superannuation on compassionate grounds. Release depends on meeting the criteria and providing medical evidence, so check your eligibility with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) before you plan around it.
We have not found reliable information on Australian private health insurance paying for rehab in Thailand. Ask your health fund directly.
Before you book
- Check eligibility for compassionate release of super with the ATO.
- Ask your health fund whether any part of treatment overseas is covered.
- Ask your travel insurer how planned treatment abroad affects your cover.
- Keep itemised invoices and clinical reports.
From the US
We have not found reliable, current information on how US health plans treat residential rehab in Thailand, so we won't guess.
Some Thai centers show the logos of US insurers on their websites. A logo is not a promise that your plan will pay, so check with your insurer before you commit.
Ask your insurer
- Does my plan cover residential addiction or mental health treatment outside the US?
- Is out-of-network or international care covered, and at what rate?
- Do I need pre-authorisation, and what do you need from the center (licence, treatment plan, itemised invoices)?
- Will you pay the center directly, or reimburse me after I pay?
- Are detox, medication and psychiatric care covered separately?
From Canada
We have not found reliable information on Canadian provincial plans or private insurers paying for rehab in Thailand. Ask both your provincial health plan and any private or employer plan before you book.
Ask your insurers
- Does my provincial plan cover any part of treatment outside Canada, and does it need approval in advance?
- Does my private or employer plan cover residential addiction treatment abroad?
- Which documents do you need, and in which language?
- Will you pay the center directly, or reimburse me after I pay?
Cost questions people ask
Questions to settle before you transfer money to a center abroad.
How much is rehab in Thailand for a month?
Centers publish prices of about US$4,300–25,700 for a 28–30 day residential program (October 2026). Mid-range programs cost about US$8,000–12,500, and the overall average is about US$12,000. Add flights, a visa, medication and any extras the center charges separately.
Are longer programs cheaper per week?
Sometimes. Most centers price per 28–30 days, and some offer discounted 8-week or 12-week packages. Ask for the total price of the whole stay in writing rather than multiplying the monthly rate.
Do centers ask for a deposit?
Some do. Published examples include a deposit of about US$2,000, sometimes non-refundable, and one center that asks for 50% of the fee before arrival. Ask what happens to the deposit if your plans change.
What happens to the money if I leave early?
Refund policies differ from center to center, and deposits may be non-refundable. Get the refund policy in writing before you pay. If you have insurance, ask your insurer how leaving early affects a claim.
Is there free or cheaper public treatment in Thailand?
Thailand's public drug-treatment system, led by the Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment and regional Thanyarak hospitals such as Thanyarak Chiangmai Hospital in Mae Rim, is low-cost or covered for Thai citizens. It is designed for Thai patients: the Chiang Mai hospital's website is in Thai and lists no English-language services.
As a guide to scale, one government hospital listed fees in 2022 of 6,000 baht for a first visit and 5,950 baht a week for outpatient treatment, plus 700–2,100 baht a night for an inpatient room.
How we compiled these figures
Thai prices are taken from what English-speaking centers publish on their own websites and in public directories, checked in October 2026. We have not visited centers or seen their invoices, and published prices can change at any time.
Western comparisons come from commercial sources, which have an interest in the comparison.
We accept no payments, referral fees or commissions from treatment centers. We describe private centers rather than name them. Read our editorial policy.
